The wreck happened around 12:20 p.m.
A driver, whose identity has not been released, was killed when a large oak tree fell on the vehicle he was driving. Police said a passenger was also injured and was taken to a hospital.
The driver of a minivan was also injured and taken the hospital after the minivan hit a utility pole and overturned, according to officers.
Police said a total of three vehicles were involved in the crash with the fallen tree.
Greg Antonucci lives next to the crash site. He said there wasn't any wind at the time of the incident. He ran outside when he heard a loud crash.
"When I saw him, we couldn't do nothing (for him). So we called 911," Antonucci said.
Officers were not sure how old the tree was. A section of the fallen tree was saved by investigators so it could be analyzed by an arborist.
Sunrise Boulevard from Locher Way to Sayonara Drive was closed for hours as crews cleared debris from the roadway, Citrus Heights police said.
“We would have been actually under there had we just been five minutes earlier," said Kathy Rush. "It’s very very sad."
A tree service was working to clean up the split tree.
Police said the roadway reopened around 8:30 p.m.
