Don't overlook this Movie because it's "weird" and foreign
This is a very good Blu-ray release by GKIDS of this timeless classic that also comes with a DVD copy. My only complaint is that the NTV Special which documents the making of the movie is only on the DVD. The picture quality is so impressive and captivating, you'll be doing yourself a great disservice if you don't watch Spirited Away in HD because standard 480p could never do justice to a film with such visual splendor. It's truly a work of art, and quite possibly contains the most beautiful combination of traditional animation and computer graphics committed to celluloid. The musical score composed by Joe Hisaishi is also worth mentioning, as it's one of the most beautifully poignant soundtracks I've ever heard.John Lasseter and his crew at Disney did a tremendous job with bringing Spirited Away to life into English, but it does have its weaknesses. There's added dialogue that doesn't exist in the Japanese dub, and I'm not a fan of Daveigh Chase's voice for the protagonist, Chihiro, who sounds shrill at times. Rumi Hiiragi provided a more refined voice performance for Chihiro, so I definitely recommend viewing the Japanese version if you can handle reading subtitles. Although I do think it's a good idea to take the pressure off from reading subtitles and familiarize yourself with the movie in English first, and then view it in Japanese the second or third time around.Just a word of caution, this movie is not for young children. Of course, there are children who don't get scared easily, but I would be wary showing this movie to any child under the age of 10 since it has some frightening, intense moments and a few scenes of a dragon bleeding. While Spirited Away is technically a children's movie, and was even distributed by Disney during its original theatrical run, it is unlike a typical Disney movie. It is much more mature and deep than American animated movies made for children. While the context of this movie could be somewhat difficult to grasp without at least a basic understanding of Japanese culture and Japan's postwar history, it's still a great fantasy adventure worth checking out about the wonder of living, spirituality, the human condition, and seeing the good in others. If you're well-versed in Eastern philosophy and religions, or someone with an interest in East Asia, then I think this movie would be right up your alley. Personally, Spirited Away is one of my all-time favorite movies, and this is coming from someone who has a general distaste for anime.
